Many of you will remember Sis Wade back in the early 70's when Bro. Alton Wade served as the school principal. As part of BYU Provo's "Home Coming" celebrations from the 17-20 October the University honored five alumni and supporters of BYU for making a significant impact in the lives of others. Sis Wade was recognised for her outstanding work with children born with Down Syndrome. She became an activist for the rights of persons with disabilities and has reached out to hundreds of parents and worked with the National Academy for Child Development as a speaker and chapter director. Bro. & Sis. Wade are the parents of eight children. Sis. Wades singular relationship with her youngest child, Cindy has allowed Cindy to succeed in many areas of her life despite being born with Down’s syndrome. Through her own experiences with Cindy, Sis.Wade has become an activist for the rights of the handicapped. Sis. Wade is currently training to conduct assessments of children with development problems. Our warmest congratulations to all the Wade family and to a special lady.

Rave Reviews of the Fine Arts Tour
If
you missed the classy high performance production of this years fine arts tour
group then you really did miss something. With a cast of 46 high
energetic performers with talent to burn and a sizeable support crew of staff,
sound, lighting and stage the group headed out for their planned
central-east tour. They performed in Rotorua, Gisborne, Wairoa, Hastings
and held three shows in Hamilton to packed houses. With stunning back
drops against a Peter Pan theme the group performed a variety of songs from
rock and roll to the beautiful blend of the 1930's-40's barber shop.
I saw one show and would gladly have gone again. Let me share with you
an email I recieved about the performance which sums up the show:
"Kia Ora
Ngatai & Co, Our whanau and extended cuzzies are all ecstatic after
returning from sunny Hawke's Bay. Hastings Opera House provided a venue
fitting for a brilliant night at the Opera. We were blessed and
privileged to a well polished performance and showmanship of excellence,
by all the talented performing arts students. Last night brought tears
of joy and sadness, as we sat reminiscing the reputation that C.C.N.Z. musical
directors, sound crew and behind the scenes team have presented over the
past decades. Who all have the expertise and experience in delivering a
fine showcase of absolute excellence. NZ Idol ain't see nothing yet, those
student's were superstars and made us all proud to be part of a
vibrant educational force. A BIG warm thanks to our church auxiliary's,
for having the foresight to teach our children well and providing them, with
their potentially forming years. Kia Kaha, Sis
Stills (nee Ngakuru)"
Not so high profile but still successful
I thought a nice story of a not so high profile Church College team would remind us that we all can make and enjoy success if we are willing to put in the effort. A big thanks to the coach and team management for submitting this article.
CCNZ Girls Hockey 2006Team

Coach Paturika Wehipeihana (Pat) Manager Brother R
Josephs This year over half of the team were new to hockey and so the
team entered the ‘C’grade competition. Throughout the season
the girls had many challenges, such as Stage Challenge,Performing Arts and
other sporting commitments. However, they grew in skill and team work.
The girls made the final and were very excited. They had already played
the opposing team two previous times and lost both games. Otorohanga
were also the reigning champions and had shared the trophy the year previous
with CCNZ. It was indeed going to be an exciting game. On Thursday
the 14thof September 2006 we all gathered at the Innes Common Turf
in Hamilton. At first glance it looked like the whole of Otorohanga
had come to support their team. That was scary. The girls played
with 100% determination, remembering skills and team work. They played
hard and when the whistle blew at full time the score was 1 all. After
the referees had conferred they decided to have a penalty shoot out. The
coaches chose five of their best strikers. Each girl looked nervous and
yet excited. They performed well and the goalie (Natalie) performed to
her best ability. However, once again it was a draw. This meant
only one thing....Sudden Death! The girls got ready and with last minute
instruction and huge support went onto the turf. Natalie was poised and
made some terrific saves. Our girls struck the ball with precision and
came out on top. We Won!!!!! Before anyone realized the whole team
and support team were on the turf jumping and yelling for joy. The
Champions for 2006, unbelievable, and yet absolutely gratifying. Congratulations
girls and thanks to all those vocal supporters that put the icing on the cake
that night".
Labour Weekend Alumni Basketball Tournament
The
annual Alumni sponsored basketball tournament held on campus Labour Weekend
proved yet again to be a highlight in the years calendar. Eight men's
teams and six women's teams competed over the weekend for top honours in
what has come to be the showcase of Church College basketball. Ably
controlled by Quintin and Rebecca Hapuku, Sue Nikora, Api Hemi, Yanna Hemi
(score bench) and Glenn Marsh (chief referee) and a host of
volunteers the tournament went smoothly. The standard of play was great
with the two finals being tough games which could have gone either way.
Congratulations to North harbour-winners of the women's final and Hamilton
Titans who won the men's final.
Successful Alumni Fireside Report
On Sunday 22nd October the Alumni Association hosted a fireside in the Auditorium. About 200 people gathered to listen to testimonies and faith promoting experiences of individuals that came who spent time on campus in various capacities. The theme of the evening was "A special place in our hearts....." The musical items by Hemi Tahi Pene, Michael and Jenna Walmsley and Holly Odgers (nee Walmsley) and also Jenine Kirifi (nee Whitehead) were inspirational. A special thanks to Bro. Lloyd keung for hosting us on campus and President Pogai for presiding. And thanks to the speakers; Hemi Tahi Pene, Gary Barker, Glen Burgess and Cairo Tarawhiti. Richard Ball also gave a brief progress report on the plans for the reunion. President Pogai's closing remarks capped off a nice evening.
Brisbane/Gold Coast Alumni Fireside
Alumni Chapter Chairs in different areas are fast following the example started in Laie, Hawaii and Hawkes Bay and are calling Alumni to attend special firesides. Here is the notice for those of you in the Brisbane/Goldcoast area.
A blast from the past
This
month we are happy to feature Harold Van Beek. Harold attended school in
1977-78 and has been our only student to ever have competed in the athletic
event of walking. In 1978 Harold competed in the NZ Secondary
Schools Champs in Wellington and in his first national competition he finished
2nd. Harold left New Zealand in 1982 and now resides in Luxembourg which
is in Western Europe, between France and Germany. He is currently
the Dutch Champion for the 20km and 5000 indoor walk events. He
still race walks but in the last 8 years has broadened his interests to
include cycling, mountain biking, running and squash. Great that
alumni are still active.
.
Congratulations Graduates
Bro. Lloyd keung has shared with me the names of those who graduated from Victoria university in Wellington last year. Eldon Paki (MS Financial Math), Scott Webber (BSc and Commerce and Administration) and Jay Christian (BSc Commerce and Administration). Congratulations and good luck as you build the kingdom in New Zealand.
Reunion
This section has been included again to answer questions those new to recieving our newsletter may have.
Greetings from the Reunion Committee
As I am writing this, it is, as my sweetheart would say – only 598 sleeps to go. This is really not long and we are excited. Thank you for all the suggestions, please keep them coming. The planning is well underway and we thought this would be a good time to answer some frequently asked questions about the reunion.
How are we going to accommodate everybody that will come, especially in light of the recent announcement about the closing of the school?
We are aware that as this reunion may be the last one of its type, interest is extremely high with initial feedback indicating the number planning to attend will exceed past reunion attendances by a significant amount. Exactly how many, no one as yet knows so we have designed the reunion to have as many of you as possible come. As the structure / facilities use of past reunions would not allow everyone planning to attend this reunion fit into all the activities (i.e.: limited seating for the variety show etc) we have changed how the reunion will be run.
We have therefore received approval from the College to erect a tent on the Number #1 football field, which will allow approx 5,000 of us to enjoy the activities together. All major activities will be under the “big top”. This allows us to utilise other areas of the school for smaller activities as we split up into smaller era related groups.
Thursday 24th – Mon 28th, April 2008
Isn’t the reunion traditionally at Easter?
Yes, but in 2008, Easter is in March and the school is still in term 1. It will not be an option for us to interrupt the current student body activities at that time.
The NZ MET service indicates that the most stable weather patterns are now in Feb, Mar & Apr. With your faith and prayers I am sure we will have perfect weather.
Possibly, certainly, that month. While we have been planning this Reunion since the 2003, early this year the new Mayor of Hamilton has sought to bring the V8 Super car race to Hamilton. Initially, we delayed announcing the date in the hope that we could work around the V8 race but cannot hold anymore, as you all need the time left to plan.
While the city has received approval to host the race, it still has yet to receive resource consent and announce which date the race will be in April 2008. It now seems likely that this process will now take until the end of this year.
In discussions with the Mayor we are led to understand that the date that will be selected will be one weekend sometime during the school holidays in April. There are 3 weekends during that school holidays that may be selected. Those same school holidays are of course, also the optimum time frame for our reunion too.
Mayor Redman also states that the cities preferred date is earlier in April so we are hopeful there will not be a clash and that the race is on one of the two weekends prior to our reunion.
Murphy’s law of course will tell you that they will choose the same date as us, therefore it is important to realise that we are a stand-alone activity and not dependant upon the city in that all of our activities will be at college.
What will be under heavy demand will be hotel / motel accommodation and restaurants should you wish to go into town for a meal. Based on previous reunions the great percentage of you will turn local families / cuzzies / members homes into maraes for the weekend but for those who wish to stay in a motel / hotel the secret is this:
BOOK YOUR ROOMS NOW!!!
How can I help?
We will soon be requesting help in various areas. This will be from help in putting up the “big top” and taking it down, registration desks, displaying your talents at the variety show etc.
Further notices in regard to these will be coming soon.
Richard richard@lifefitness.co.nz
During the reunion itself there will be some time for Era's to get together and catch up on old times. Your Era Reps would be happy to hear from you with suggestions as to what your group can do. Email them.........
